Rowhouse, Townhouse & Whole-Home Moving in DC

Residential moving in the District is its own discipline. I’m Damon Whitfield, and after fifteen years running Mercy Movers I can tell you the houses themselves are most of the job. A 3-bedroom rowhouse on Capitol Hill is not the same lift as a 3-bedroom split-level in Bethesda, and the quote should reflect that.

The houses we move every week

  • Capitol Hill brick rowhouses — 1880s-1910s, marble stoops, steep stairs, English-basement units.
  • Georgetown federal-style townhouses — cobblestone alleys, no driveways, parking permits required.
  • Logan Circle and Shaw rowhomes — renovated to luxury, three floors plus cellar.
  • Petworth and Brookland bungalows — narrow front steps, basements with bulkhead doors.
  • Bethesda and Silver Spring single-family — longer driveways, attached garages, basement gyms.

How we quote a whole home

I walk the house room by room (in person or by video), inventory the furniture, and write a binding flat rate. The number is built around three things: how much is going, how far it is going, and how hard the access is on both ends. Stoops, stairs and freight-elevator windows add real labor — they get itemized so you can see them, not buried in a fudge factor.

DC residential pricing

Home size Crew Typical DC-area flat rate
2-bedroom rowhouse 3 movers + truck ($219/hr hourly equivalent) $1,285 – $1,640
3-bedroom Georgetown townhouse 3-4 movers + truck $1,985 – $2,650
4-bedroom Bethesda single-family 4 movers + truck $2,950 – $3,850

Released-value coverage at $0.60 / lb is included, full-value optional, up to $1,000,000 cargo coverage per shipment. We are a real licensed Washington, DC moving company — DC moving license plus US DOT and MC authority on file, our own trucks, our own W-2 uniformed crew, the same faces both ends.

What rides in your DC flat rate

  • Room-by-room inventory and binding flat-rate quote (not a not-to-exceed)
  • Quad-pad blanket-wrap on every furniture piece; mattress bags on every bed; TV boxes for every screen
  • Floor and stair runners across marble stoops, hardwood, and rowhouse staircases
  • Disassembly and reassembly of beds, dining tables, sectionals, IKEA wardrobes and Peloton
  • Crating quotes on heirlooms, marble tops and large mirrors before move day, not on the truck
  • Furniture pads stay on the pieces overnight when there is a one-day delay between load and unload

What will it run?

Two of our movers and a truck at $169/hr, or lock one flat written DC number up front

Blankets, dollies, shrink-wrap and basic COI prep all ride in the rate; step up to a three-mover crew with truck at $219/hr.

Questions on this service

Do you move whole rowhouses on Capitol Hill and in Logan/Shaw?
Yes — that is most of our residential work. Three floors plus a cellar, narrow staircases, the curve at the landing, the marble stoop. Marcus's crew has the choreography down: which pieces hoist, which come apart, which go through the cellar door.
How does Mercy Movers protect Georgetown townhouse interiors?
Federal-style townhouses have historic plaster, original moldings and tight doorways. We mask doorframes, lay heavy runners over hardwoods, and pad the newel posts. The federal-period staircases get hand-walked, not skidded.
Can you do same-day load and unload across the DMV?
For everything inside the Beltway, yes. From DC to Annapolis, Fredericksburg, or out to Loudoun we still finish same day in most cases. Two-day jobs come up when we are moving from a 4-bedroom in Bethesda to a long-distance destination.
What about my piano, gun safe or marble dining table?
Specialty items go on our specialty / piano move workflow with the right equipment — piano boards, stair-climbing dollies, custom crating. Andre is our specialty lead and walks every one before quoting.
How it works

How a DC move with our crew comes together

1

Send both ZIPs and a target date

The address you’re leaving, the one you’re landing in, and the size of the home — under a minute, nothing owed.

2

Read one flat DC figure in writing

A single locked number lands back — no hourly clock ticking on the crew while they work the stoop.

3

Our uniformed DC crew rolls in

W-2 movers in our own trucks arrive on schedule and run the whole job from first box to last.

Fully licensed

US DOT & MC authorityActive federal authority stands behind us the moment your load crosses a state line up I-95 or out toward Pittsburgh.
