Local Moving Across Washington, DC and the DMV

I’m Damon Whitfield, owner of Mercy Movers. I grew up between Anacostia and Capitol Hill, spent years coordinating federal-contractor facility moves, and started this company in 2010 on one rule: lock the flat price in writing before the truck rolls. Every local DC move I quote follows that rule.

Local for us means the District itself plus the near-in DMV ring — Arlington and Alexandria across the river, Bethesda and Silver Spring over the line. Our crew chiefs Andre, Devon and Marcus all live inside the Beltway, so the routing between Capitol Hill rowhouses and a Bethesda condo is a workday, not a logistics puzzle.

What a DC local move actually looks like

  1. Walk-through and binding quote. In person or by video. I write the flat rate before anyone signs.
  2. Building paperwork. COIs for the Wharf, Navy Yard and most NoMa high-rises; freight-elevator reservation; loading-dock window.
  3. Move day. Same uniformed crew loads and unloads. No swaps, no day-labor handoffs.

DC local pricing — flat rate written before we load

Crew & truck Hourly Typical flat-rate example
2 movers + 26′ truck $169 / hr Dupont studio → Logan 1BR: $589 flat
3 movers + 26′ truck $219 / hr Capitol Hill 2BR rowhouse → Bethesda condo: $1,285 flat
3 movers + 26′ truck $219 / hr Georgetown 3BR townhouse → Arlington: $1,940 flat

Blankets, dollies, shrink-wrap, stair work and COI prep are included. Released-value coverage is $0.60 / lb; full-value coverage and up to $1,000,000 cargo coverage per shipment are optional add-ons. One-hour minimum.

Why DC moves break when crews skip steps

The District has its own rhythm: marble stoops chip if you skid a wardrobe down them, Georgetown alleys eat box trucks that didn’t measure the turn, and a Wharf freight window starts and ends on the dot. Our crews lay heavy floor runners on every job, scout the turn before we back in, and confirm building windows the day before. Need long-distance instead? What rides in your DC flat rate

  • Walk-through (in-person or video) of every room, stoop, hallway and elevator before I quote
  • Heavy floor runners on marble stoops, hardwood, and rowhouse stair treads — every job, no upcharge
  • Building paperwork handled: COIs for Wharf and Navy Yard high-rises, freight reservations, dock windows
  • Quad-pad blanket-wrap on every furniture piece, shrink for upholstery, dollies and straps included
  • DC parking-permit pull when the block requires it (Georgetown alleys, Capitol Hill side streets)
  • Same uniformed crew loads in NW and unloads in SE — no swaps, no day-labor handoffs mid-job

What will it run?

Two of our movers and a truck at $169/hr, or lock one flat written DC number up front

Blankets, dollies, shrink-wrap and basic COI prep all ride in the rate; step up to a three-mover crew with truck at $219/hr.

Questions on this service

How does Mercy Movers handle Capitol Hill rowhouses with the narrow stairs and marble stoops?
We run a stoop pad over the marble, mast-strap the long pieces, and walk dressers up sideways through the turn. Andre's crew does Hill rowhouses every week and we plan the staircase pivots before anyone lifts a box.
Do I need a parking permit for the moving truck in DC?
Most blocks in NW and on the Hill require an Emergency No Parking permit. I pull it through DDOT, post the signs the day before, and the truck-side fee gets itemized on your binding flat rate.
What does the flat rate actually cover for a DC local move?
Truck, fuel, two or three uniformed movers, blankets, dollies, shrink-wrap, stair work, COI prep and tolls. The number I write on the estimate is the number you pay on move-day, assuming the inventory matches what I walked.
How early should I book a weekend slot in the District?
End-of-month Saturdays in the DMV fill three to four weeks out, especially during PCS season and summer Hill turnover. Midweek and mid-month I can usually slot within 7 days.
How it works

How a DC move with our crew comes together

1

Send both ZIPs and a target date

The address you’re leaving, the one you’re landing in, and the size of the home — under a minute, nothing owed.

2

Read one flat DC figure in writing

A single locked number lands back — no hourly clock ticking on the crew while they work the stoop.

3

Our uniformed DC crew rolls in

W-2 movers in our own trucks arrive on schedule and run the whole job from first box to last.
