Piano, Safe, Embassy & Specialty Moving

Specialty work in DC is a meaningful slice of what we do. Embassy Row on Massachusetts Ave, Hill rowhouse parlors with century-old uprights, Bethesda basements with 800-lb gun safes — these are not the jobs you point a general crew at. Andre Whitlock runs our specialty board, and every piano, safe or crate gets walked before I write the number.

Why specialty pieces have their own crew

  1. The pieces are unforgiving. A baby grand has a center of gravity that punishes shortcuts; a marble dining top cracks on a flex.
  2. The houses are unforgiving. Capitol Hill rowhouse staircases turn at the landing — uprights have to come through that turn without scarring the plaster.
  3. The paperwork is unforgiving. Embassy households document chain-of-custody. We sign for it.

DC specialty & piano pricing

Specialty piece Crew Typical flat rate
Upright piano, one floor, no stairs 3 movers ($219/hr) $489 – $635
Upright, rowhouse stairs (Capitol Hill) 3 movers $685 – $885
Baby grand, legs off, hoist or wide entry 4 movers $985 – $1,485
Gun safe, 600-1,000 lb, basement-out 3-4 movers $685 – $1,140
Embassy custom crate (per piece) Specialty crew $285 – $785

Specialty pieces fit naturally into a whole-home residential move or sit on their own as a stand-alone piano or safe job. If the piece is heading out of state, we put it on the same truck as the rest of your long-distance shipment and the same Mercy crew unloads it at destination. Licensed and insured, DC moving license plus US DOT and MC authority on file.

Questions on this service

Do you move upright and baby-grand pianos out of Capitol Hill rowhouses?
Yes — uprights through standard stairwells, baby-grands legs-off on a skid board through the front door or, when the doorway is too tight, hoisted out a parlor window with a four-person crew. Every piano move is walked first by Andre.
Can you handle a 700-lb gun safe on a basement-to-truck pull?
Yes. Safes up to about 1,000 lbs get a rated dolly, two-person stair-walk on padded treads, and ratchet-strap securement in the truck. Anything heavier we quote a four-person crew.
What about embassy china, chandeliers and diplomatic-grade crating?
We have done diplomatic households on Massachusetts Ave for years. Custom crating is built off your inventory walk — pieces I or Andre lay hands on before quoting. The cost is itemized on the binding flat rate.
Is there a separate piano price or is it inside the move quote?
Either way works. If the piano is part of a whole-home move, it is itemized inside the flat rate. If you only need the piano moved, it is a flat rate by itself — see the table below.
How it works

How a DC move with our crew comes together

1

Send both ZIPs and a target date

The address you’re leaving, the one you’re landing in, and the size of the home — under a minute, nothing owed.

2

Read one flat DC figure in writing

A single locked number lands back — no hourly clock ticking on the crew while they work the stoop.

3

Our uniformed DC crew rolls in

W-2 movers in our own trucks arrive on schedule and run the whole job from first box to last.
